    🇪🇺 A Proud European Moment! 🇪🇺 Emissions are going down. The EU continues to demonstrate that sustainability and economic growth can go hand in hand. In the second quarter of 2024, our greenhouse gas emissions fell by 2.6% compared to the same period last year, marking a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint while boosting economic progress. Five out of nine economic sectors have reduced their emissions, with the biggest impact seen in: Electricity and gas supply: -12.1% Households: -4.2% What drove the change? ⚉Renewable Energy Expansion →In 2023, 37% of EU electricity came from renewables, up from 35% in 2022, leading to a 5% reduction in emissions from the energy sector. →The renewable energy sector created over 300,000 jobs and saw €100 billion in investments in 2023. →The clean energy transition contributed to a 1.5% GDP growth in 2023, showing the economic benefits of green energy. ⚉Energy Efficiency Measures →Energy efficiency improvements in buildings saved the EU €80 billion in energy costs annually. →The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) led to a 20% reduction in energy consumption, benefiting both the environment and the economy. →The energy efficiency sector added €30 billion to EU GDP in 2023, proving the economic value of sustainable investments. ⚉Decarbonisation of the Industrial Sector →The industrial sector reduced emissions by 5.8% since 2020, driven by low-carbon technologies and cleaner processes. →The circular economy initiative saved €7 billion and reduced industrial waste by 4%. →The sector’s green transition helped spur 3% GDP growth in 2023, as businesses embraced sustainable manufacturing practices. ⚉Sustainable Mobility →Electric vehicle (EV) sales grew by 40% in 2023, with EVs now accounting for 12% of total car sales, contributing to a 6.5% reduction in transport emissions. →The EU invested €10 billion in green transport infrastructure, creating jobs and reducing emissions. →The green transport sector contributed €15 billion to the economy in 2023, driving growth and innovation in sustainable mobility. ⚉Green Innovation in Households →The adoption of energy-efficient appliances resulted in a 15% reduction in household energy consumption over the past decade. →4 million households upgraded to smart energy systems, reducing energy bills by €300 per year on average, while also lowering their carbon footprint. →The green technology boom in households generated €5 billion in economic activity.     🚦Green waves: traffic lights synchronized so that vehicles maintaining a certain speed (50 km/h) hit green after green. For decades, this has been a strong tool in traffic engineering. But what happens when the speed is adapted to cyclists (20 km/h) instead? This brilliant video from the cyclist and Reddit user (u/MiserNYC on r/MicromobilityNYC – link in comments) captures the experience perfectly: riding New York's Crescent Street (Queens), where NYC DOT implemented a #GreenWave for #cyclists at 15 mph (~24 km/h), hitting light after light without stopping. This encourages speed harmonization: faster cyclists slow down, slower ones speed up, creating a safer, more predictable peloton. Regarding safety, crashes on this street dropped from 12 to 7, and pedestrian-cyclist crashes went from 4 to zero. Copenhagen already pioneered this in 2007 on Norrebrogade ("Gron Bolge"). Travel times dropped 17%, and average cyclist speed jumped from 15.1 to 20.7 km/h. The system coordinates with bus signal priority, proving that cycling and public transport can coexist in the same signal plan 🚌💛🚴. All this, with almost zero infrastructure cost💵. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) reported a 9.5% annual growth in vehicle registrations, with Ahmedabad alone seeing over 1.5 lakh new vehicles yearly. This surge calls for a paradigm shift in how we approach urban mobility. Financial sustainability is key to transforming public transport systems into self-sustaining entities. Revenue diversification is crucial, and successful models like Transport for London, which generates substantial revenue through advertising and corporate partnerships, provide valuable insights. Indian systems are adopting similar strategies—premium services, advertising, and monetizing public spaces in metro and bus terminals are becoming vital revenue streams. Public transport networks can also play a role in logistics. The Indian Railways’ shift towards freight corridors, earning more from cargo than passengers, exemplifies this potential. By using existing bus and train networks for cargo, developing parcel hubs, and collaborating with e-commerce platforms, India's transport systems could not only ease urban congestion but also create new revenue streams. The future of mobility lies in multi-modal transport solutions. These integrated systems—comprising buses, trains, cycling, and shared mobility—offer the way forward. Projects like the Ahmedabad and Mumbai Metro expansions are pivotal in this vision. Mumbai's suburban trains, carrying over 7.5 million passengers daily, reduce the need for private vehicles.     Nature's Inspiration, Tomorrow's Innovation. Just take a stroll down any supermarket aisle or glance into your shopping trolley—you'll likely see a sea of packaging, a lot of which is unrecyclable and likely to end up in landfill. Even packs that are recyclable are non-optimal and use too many materials or components But there's hope on the horizon, as creative designers like Margarita Talep are finding solutions. She has pioneered an ingenious solution—an alternative to traditional plastic packaging derived from algae. Her project began with a simple question—how can we produce packaging that holds up well in use but breaks down quickly after its purpose is served? The answer lies in Agar, a gel-like substance from seaweed. Chances are, you're familiar with Agar as a food thickener. The process involves heating it to make a polymer, then adding water to make it flexible. The material comprises solely natural elements, right down to the dyes used to colour it—a rainbow of hues are extracted from the skins of fruits and vegetable such as blueberries, purple cabbage, beetroot, and carrot. The manufacturing process is quite simple. The mixture is heated and cooled with care until it transforms into a flexible gel. This gel can then be rolled into thin plastic sheets or poured into moulds, adapting to various shapes and packaging styles, like forming trays for donuts or creating bags for pasta. It's designed to naturally break down. During warmer months, it disappears in two to three months, with the timeframe influenced by thickness. Even in colder months, the breakdown continues, albeit at a slightly slower pace. Margarita Talep holds a strong conviction that bio-fabrication will not merely shape future industries but play a pivotal role in them. She stresses the importance of of environmentally conscious processes when extracting raw materials and during production. Yet, her vision transcends material creation—it demands seamless alignment with broader actions. Countries around the world are encouraged to take proactive steps by adopting plans to reduce packaging waste. Embracing circular economy initiatives is key, as they ensure plastic stays in a continuous cycle rather than contributing to landfills or polluting our oceans.     🌿 Learning to Design More Sustainably: Insights from an Eco-Product Expert In the rapidly evolving fashion industry, sustainability is moving from a niche concern to a core component of product design. As an eco-product expert, my mission is to guide and inspire brands towards more environmentally friendly practices, beginning right at the design stage. This commitment to sustainability is crucial because every decision in product design reverberates through the entire lifecycle of an item. 👖 Consider the anatomy of a simple garment, such as a pair of jeans. An attached image vividly breaks down the numerous components involved: from threads, buttons, and rivets to denim, labels, and dyes. Each component is an opportunity for sustainable innovation. 🔩 Take, for instance, the button. Traditionally, jean buttons are a challenge for recycling due to their permanent attachment. By redesigning the button as a screw-on, we not only facilitate easy removal at the end of the garment's life, enhancing recyclability, but also allow the button to be reused on another item, thereby extending its lifecycle and reducing waste. 🌱 Moving to the fabric itself, denim is typically cotton-based, which is water and chemical-intensive. An alternative like hemp can drastically reduce the environmental footprint as it requires significantly less water and fewer chemicals. Incorporating such materials into designs is not just about substituting one for another; it’s about rethinking the system to prioritise ecological balance. ♻️ Consider also the leather-like labels often found on jeans. These are usually made from plastics and are purely decorative. Eliminating these and opting for water-based ink prints directly on the fabric can significantly reduce plastic use and the overall environmental impact. Similarly, shifting from conventional dyes to environmentally kinder options can mitigate pollution and enhance the sustainability of the production process. 🌍 As designers and product specialists, we have the power and responsibility to lead the charge in sustainable design. By analysing and rethinking each component of a product from an eco-design perspective, we can make profound contributions to sustainability. This approach not only helps in reducing the environmental impact but also aligns with the growing consumer demand for responsible and ethical products. 💡 By supporting innovation and challenging traditional manufacturing processes, we can transform how products are designed, produced, and perceived.     🌿 Rebuilding Our Connection to Nature – Lessons from Cities, Cycling & Biophilia 🚲 During my MSc in Behavioural Science, I specialised in environmental psychology – exploring how nature connectedness can be woven into the fabric of our cities. My thesis focused on green infrastructure as a driver of human–nature connection, showing how everyday environments can support both wellbeing and biodiversity. That’s why this new research from Professor Miles Richardson really caught my attention: our connection to nature has fallen by over 60% in the past 200 years. https://lnkd.in/eN3tiAaY Urbanisation, biodiversity loss and fewer childhood nature experiences are driving what’s being called an “extinction of experience”. I condensed my thesis into this blog, https://lnkd.in/ertYXKd5 I explored one practical solution: green cycling corridors. These don’t just move people; they bring nature into our daily routines 🌳🦋 – no special trip to a park required. The Eight Values of Biophilia offer a useful lens: 🌱 Naturalistic – Direct contact with nature on your commute. 🎨 Aesthetic – Visually uplifting spaces. 🤝 Humanistic – Shared outdoor experiences. 🔬 Ecologistic-Scientific – Learning from local biodiversity. 🌍 Moralistic / Symbolic – Cities signalling that nature belongs here. The Guardian calls for a 1,000% increase in accessible green space. My research and Cycling UK’s work suggest a clear pathway: design our transport networks as nature networks too. It highlights a number of signficant issues with #supplychain and #procurement practices within the sector: 1. Labour Exploitation Migrant workers, including Indigenous peoples from Central America, suffer from low wages, excessively long hours, unsanitary housing, harassment, and violence, particularly targeting women. 2. Forced and Child Labour Cases of modern slavery persist, with children exposed to hazardous working conditions. 3. Health & Living Conditions Lack of healthcare and social benefits; overcrowded and unsafe housing; exposure to agrochemical pollution, linked to childhood leukaemia and other illnesses. 4. Climate Crisis Impacts Rising temperatures affect crop yields, particularly coffee. Environmental degradation due to deforestation, agrochemical use, and industrial waste mismanagement. 5. Transparency Issues Many firms lack public #humanrights policies, particularly in the sugarcane sector. The lessons for #procurement and #supplychain functions from the report include: - Strengthen supplier accountability and require suppliers to publicly disclose human rights policies. - Ensure compliance with fair labour standards. - Implement ethical sourcing practices, prioritise suppliers with strong human rights commitments. - Avoid sourcing from companies with documented labour abuses. - Monitor and audit supply chains, conduct regular audits to verify compliance with labour rights and environmental standards. - Use independent verification mechanisms. - Support sustainable procurement, encourage suppliers to reduce agrochemical use and adopt renewable energy. - Promote fair trade models that empower local communities. These recommendations aim to protect workers, increase transparency, and promote sustainability in agroindustry, but are obviously applicable across many similar supply chains.
