The number of employed people increased by more than 100,000, the largest increase in four months, but the employment rate fell for four consecutive months. The unemployment rate of young people aged 15 to 29 rose the most in five and a half years, and the sluggish employment of young people continued.

According to the July Employment Trend released by the National Data Agency on the 12th, the number of employed people aged 15 and over in July was 29.136 million, up 108,000 from a year ago.

The number of employed people continued to increase between 100,000 and 200,000 in January and March this year, but slowed to 74,000 in April and then decreased by 40,000 in May. Since then, the number has increased by 63,000 in June, turning to an increase, and slightly increasing last month.

The employment rate for those aged 15 and over fell 0.1 percentage point (p) to 63.3%. The employment rate continued to decline for four consecutive months.

By industry, the number of people employed in the manufacturing industry decreased by 68,000, marking the 25th consecutive month of decline. However, the decline was lower than in June (-97,000).

The number of people employed in the construction industry also decreased by 57,000 for the 27th month. In addition, the number of employed in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries also decreased by 80,000.

The number of young people aged 15 to 29 fell by 191,000, continuing the decline for 45 months.

The employment rate of young people fell 1.6 percentage points to 44.2 percent. It has been on the decline for 27 consecutive months.

In addition, the youth unemployment rate rose 1.3 percentage points to 6.8 percent. This is the largest since January 2021 (1.8%p).

The total number of unemployed was 776,000, up 50,000 from a year ago. The unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 2.6 percent.

The economically inactive population also increased by 99,000 to 16.103 million. On the other hand, the number of 'rested' population decreased by 62,000 to 2,518,000.
