    What does it mean to design with the land? Not what’s imported. Not what’s trending. But what grows right here. We began by asking this in Dhunar Gaon, a Himalayan forest village. What materials are available in the forest? What do people use? What do they avoid? What gets ignored, wasted, or forgotten? This led us to explore bioregional materials — resources that emerge from the region’s own forests, soil, and seasons. Materials shaped by climate and culture. Materials that belong. One of them was Lantana camara. A colonial plant that spread aggressively. Now considered invasive. But strong, light, and full of potential. Could we turn a problem into possibility? So we designed घोसला (ghosla) — a backpack made with Lantana, and Bhimal fibre. Simple. But not easy. In trying to make this humble object, we realised how much we had to learn. When joints failed, when the shape collapsed — we saw how deep indigenous crafts go. They’ve been refined over centuries. Adapted to specific tools, fibres, forces. Bioregional design isn’t just about materials. It’s about knowledge. People. Practice. Place. We need to find more such materials. Document them. Test them. Use them with care and curiosity. We need to build symbiotic economies — where local materials are shaped by local skills. And where intellectual capital meets indigenous wisdom. घोसला is just a small beginning. But it’s taught us what it means to truly design from place.     If you copy Western UX patterns for African markets, you'll fail. Here's what actually works. I've designed for both international and African users and the difference isn't just language or aesthetics. It's about understanding behavior, context, and trust. One thing that works extremely well for African users: Clarity + reassurance. In many African markets: → Users are cautious.  → Trust is earned, not assumed.  → People double-check before they pay.  So what works? → Clear step-by-step flows.  → Visible customer support access.  → Strong confirmation states.  → Explicit pricing breakdowns.  → Familiar payment methods.  Here's the nuance most designers miss: Minimalism is good but over-minimalism can reduce trust here. In Western markets, a clean, minimal checkout can signal sophistication. In African markets, that same minimal design can feel incomplete or unclear. Users want to know: ✅What happens next? ✅Can I reach someone if this goes wrong? ✅Are there hidden fees? ✅Is this secure? ✅If your design doesn't answer these questions upfront, users hesitate. And hesitation kills conversion. How I adapt: → Study behavior patterns specific to the region → Prioritize transparency over "clean aesthetics" → Design for lower-end devices and slower networks → Simplify flows without removing reassurance UX is contextual. What builds trust in one market can feel cold or incomplete in another. If you're designing for African users or any market outside your own don't assume global best practices apply everywhere. Understand the context. Design for the user. Not the trend. Building a product for African markets or users? The UX decisions that work in the West won't always translate.     Designing With the Desert: Color Principles in Contemporary Saudi Architecture Color in Saudi architecture is not just an aesthetic choice—it is a cultural, environmental and regulatory constraint. Effective design in the region starts with understanding how palette, materiality and context align with heritage and landscape. Traditional Saudi architecture is grounded in earthy, natural tones derived from local resources and climate: *Sandy hues – beige, tan, ochre, terracotta and warm browns from mud, clay and sand. *White and off-white – used in plaster and limewash, reflecting heat and common in coastal and central regions. *Stone tones – soft greys and creams from limestone and related stone materials. These tones vary regionally while remaining rooted in local context: *Najdi (Central) – mudbrick aesthetics with warm earth tones and sand-based palettes. *Hijazi (Western) – white, coral and stone-informed colors, especially in historic Jeddah. *Asiri (Southern) – richer, patterned color use, though still grounded in natural pigments and traditional crafts. Modern projects layer contemporary neutrality onto these traditions but are increasingly governed by strict color and material guidelines. Frameworks such as those from the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) and Salmani architecture emphasize: *Harmonization – palettes must complement the desert context, favoring monochromatic or muted schemes that visually blend with the landscape. *Contextual authenticity – bright, synthetic or “imported” hues not found in local materials are discouraged or rejected. *Material-led color – façades are expected to read as natural stone, earth, plaster or timber, with finishes derived from these substrates rather than applied, high-chroma coatings. For designers, this means: 1-Start with desert, earth, sand and stone as the primary reference. 2-Validate palettes against regional regulations and heritage guidelines, particularly in controlled zones like AlUla. 3-Treat color as part of a broader sustainability and cultural preservation strategy, ensuring visual continuity with both historic fabric and the natural environment.     #UnpopularOpinion I trained in Carnatic music for over a decade. Listened to Gamaka, Sugama Sangeetha, verses of Bendre, Kuvempu pieces of poetry that carry the scent of soil, season, and story. Growing up in Karnataka, I absorbed a form of cultural literacy not found on resumes. One that taught me how food, language, and climate morph every 200 km. How festivals shift with districts. How rangoli patterns differ from village to village. But over time, I noticed something quietly unsettling. As I stepped into high-performance workspaces, I felt this richness quietly eroding. “Professionalism” began to mean sameness. “Best practice” began to mean borrowed. “Diversity” became a checkbox often global, rarely local. And that’s when it hit me. This isn’t just a cultural problem. It’s a strategic one. As a climate strategist today, I see how solutions meant for Indian communities often forget what makes India resilient: local wisdom, place-based rhythm, regional nuance. What we call traditional is often climate-smart. Ex: Channapatna’s lac-based toys are biodegradable, low-carbon, and artisan-led. What we call vernacular is deeply sustainable. Ex: Togalugari mane (mud homes) in North Karnataka regulate temperature naturally far before “passive cooling” became a climate buzzword. What we call regional is often system-aware, and centuries-tested. Ex: Tank irrigation systems in Mysore region, community-managed water governance long before SDG 6 was a thing. If we want India to lead climate solutions for the Global South, we must stop flattening what makes us unique. Not just in how we design projects. But in how we think, hire, and lead.     🌍 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 If your hydrologic or drainage model relies on default rainfall curves developed elsewhere, there’s a strong chance your design storm does not represent real conditions at your project location. Many commonly used rainfall distributions embedded in engineering software were derived from specific climate regions. Applying it universally without local validation is one of the most common and least discussed causes of errors in flood modelling and drainage design. 🛑 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 Generic rainfall curves impose a predefined temporal pattern on storms, often concentrating rain intensity in ways that do not align with observed local behaviours. In reality, storm structure varies significantly due to:  • Regional climate systems  • Topography and orographic effects  • Coastal influences  • Convective versus stratiform rainfall dominance When these differences are ignored, peak flows, runoff timing, and storage requirements can be misrepresented. 🔑 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗘𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Defensible flood modelling starts with locally derived rainfall statistics, not imported assumptions. A widely accepted approach is the 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱 (𝗔𝗕𝗠) combined with local 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆–𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻–𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 (𝗜𝗗𝗙) curves. ✔ IDF curves are made from long-term, high-resolution rainfall data and show what intensities are expected for certain lengths of time and return periods. ✔ ABM uses these intensities to construct a design hyetograph that reflects local storm dynamics rather than a generic template. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼:  • More realistic peak discharge estimates  • Appropriately sized drainage and flood infrastructure  • Stronger technical justification under review  • Increased resilience to extreme rainfall events 📌 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 Flood risk is local.     🌏 Same Part, Different Country — Why Materials Behave Differently Across Borders During my recent business trip to one of our ASEAN locations — the Philippines — I was reminded of something many engineers overlook: materials don’t just respond to load or chemistry… they respond to their environment. In Batangas and Manila, I observed parts exposed to tropical humidity, sea breeze, and frequent rain — all quietly testing how well our materials truly hold up in the real world. Even when components share the same grade and supplier, their aging behavior tells a different story under different skies. A muffler that performs well in Korea or GCC countries may corrode faster near coastal roads. A polymer blend stable in dry air can show whitening or microcracks under continuous UV and moisture. It’s a simple truth: > “The same car, built for different countries, is actually fighting different battles.” --- From a materials engineering perspective, this comes down to: 🌦️ Humidity accelerating oxidation and hydrolysis reactions. 🌊 Chloride ions from sea breeze initiating pitting corrosion, even on stainless grades. 🔆 UV and temperature cycling weakening polymer bonds and coatings over time. That’s why regional benchmarking and localized material validation are not just procedural steps — they’re strategic design decisions. In reality, even a “global platform” still needs local durability thinking. We often say data drives decisions, but I’ve learned that climate drives context. The same specification sheet can lead to different outcomes depending on where the car lives.     Why does understanding regional culture matter so much in design? Because spaces are for people. And people live through their habits, traditions, and ways of connecting with one another. When we understand a region’s culture, our designs stop being generic. They start speaking the language of the place. Let’s say, a courtyard in a home in Rajasthan is not just an aesthetic element. It’s also a shading device, a passive cooling element, and the heart of the home. But if you ignore these nuances, a building can feel inefficient, no matter how beautiful it looks on paper. On the other hand, when you design with these cultural layers in mind, the space feels natural. It blends into the way people live, work, and celebrate. I’ve seen this across different regions. In Punjab, open layouts and fluid movement between indoor and outdoor areas felt right for a community that thrives on togetherness. In coastal Kerala, shaded verandahs and cross-ventilation mirrored the slow, breezy rhythm of daily life. These choices might seem small, but they shape how people connect with their surroundings. They make a building feel like it belongs, as an extension of life there. For me, understanding local culture is the foundation of good design. What do you think about it?     We usually look at trends from places like Europe, the U.S., or Asia when it comes to design. But what if we flipped the script? What if Africa, with its rich cultural heritage, vibrant crafts, and sustainable materials, became a trendsetter in its own right? Imagine a world where global designers draw inspiration from bark cloth, handwoven mats, or bold Ankara and kitenge prints. By embracing our continent’s unique resources and traditions, we can not only adapt global trends but also redefine them, creating interiors that tell Africa’s story to the world. Minimalism has been a major trend, and it can be adapted here using local materials like wood, clay, and natural fibers. In Uganda, for example, wooden furniture paired with light, neutral tones such as beige and white fits perfectly with our tropical climate, offering minimalist yet inviting spaces. Eco-friendly design is another global trend that aligns well with African practices. Using materials like sisal, banana fibers, and clay bricks for decoration and furniture is not only sustainable but also stylish. Ugandan homes, for instance, could feature locally made terracotta tiles, reducing environmental impact while showcasing our craftsmanship. Biophilic design, which focuses on bringing nature indoors, is deeply rooted in African living. Courtyards and houseplants are common features in many homes across the continent. In Uganda, we can enhance this by introducing vertical gardens or decorating with papyrus mats, blending nature seamlessly into our interiors. To truly lead in design, as Africans, we can focus on a few key strategies. 📌First, prioritize local materials to support sustainability and local economies. 📌Second, design with our diverse climates in mind, ensuring comfort and functionality. 📌Third, celebrate the continent’s rich cultures by incorporating traditional crafts, patterns, and art. 📌Finally, offer affordable designs that make modern, stylish spaces accessible to all.     Soft-launching a research report I spent this summer on: “The American Northeast as a Bioregion for Regenerative Construction,” It is an effort to map the existing ecosystem of stakeholders and resources involved in regenerative building practices in the American Northeast. Combining desktop research, interviews, field visits and design drawings, it illustrates the many stages of the supply chain – from farms, forests and coastal landscapes to the interior of our homes. It seeks to tell stories of opportunities to uplift a growing regional network of advocacy and action to once again build with biomass. I am interested in feedback. Who needs to know this beyond a small group of biobased material enthusiasts? Who can turn some of these ideas into policies that strengthen the supply chain?
