Click-to-Play (C2P) ads are Facebook’s purpose-built ad format for Instant Games. They let players try your game directly from the ad unit, with no download required.
What are Click-to-Play ads?
A Click-to-Play ad is an ad unit that, when tapped, launches your Instant Game directly within the Facebook environment. The player moves directly from the ad creative into your game’s loading screen and then into gameplay. Because Instant Games are HTML5-based and run within Facebook, there is no external redirect — the entire experience happens within the Facebook app or browser.
C2P ads can include standard ad creative (video, image, carousel) that showcases your game, followed by a call-to-action button (typically “Play Now” or “Play Game”) that launches the game when tapped.
How C2P ads differ from traditional app install ads
Traditional app install ads direct users to an app store (Google Play or the Apple App Store), where they must download and install the app before they can play. This multi-step funnel creates significant drop-off at every stage:
| Step | Traditional App Install | Click-to-Play |
|---|---|---|
1. See ad | Player sees ad in Feed | Player sees ad in Feed |
2. Tap CTA | Redirected to app store | Game starts loading immediately |
3. Download | Must download app (may take minutes) | No download required |
4. Install | Must wait for installation | No installation required |
5. Open | Must find and open the app | Already in the game |
6. Play | Finally reaches gameplay | Already playing |
With traditional ads, each step between “see ad” and “play game” loses a significant percentage of users. Click-to-Play ads compress this entire funnel into a single tap, which can produce higher conversion rates and lower effective cost per install.
Where C2P ads appear
Facebook can deliver Click-to-Play ads across several placement surfaces:
Feed
C2P ads appear in the Facebook News Feed on both mobile and desktop. Feed placements offer large creative real estate and are the most common placement for C2P campaigns. Players scrolling through their feed will see your ad creative and can tap to play immediately.
Note: Desktop delivery on the Feed can yield higher-quality players. Desktop users often have longer sessions and higher engagement rates. If your game performs well on desktop, consider weighting your campaign toward desktop placements.
Stories
C2P ads can appear in Facebook Stories, the full-screen format that players swipe through. Stories placements work well for visually engaging creative — short gameplay videos or high-contrast visuals that take advantage of the full-screen format.
Audience Network
The Facebook Audience Network can also deliver C2P ads, extending your reach to apps and websites outside of Facebook. The Audience Network helps you reach potential players who are not actively browsing Facebook but are engaged with other mobile content.
How players interact with C2P ads
The player experience with a C2P ad is straightforward:
- The player sees the ad in their Feed, Stories, or on the Audience Network. The ad creative (video, image, or carousel) showcases your game.
- The player taps the call-to-action (“Play Now,” “Play Game,” or similar). There is no app store redirect.
- The game loads directly within the Facebook environment. The player sees your game’s loading screen.
- The player is in the game and can start playing immediately. They have a fully functional game session with all SDK features available.
- After the session, the player can return to Facebook. If they enjoyed the game, they can find it again in the Gaming Tab under “Recently Played,” add a shortcut, or receive re-engagement notifications.
This direct transition from ad to gameplay means that the quality of the first few seconds of your game experience is critical. Players who arrive through a C2P ad are in a “try it” mindset, so the opening seconds must capture their interest quickly. See Creative for guidance on using custom payloads to personalize the post-click experience for ad-acquired players.
Why C2P ads are effective for Instant Games
Click-to-Play ads leverage several unique advantages of the Instant Games platform:
- No download or install step: The single biggest advantage. By eliminating the download and install steps, C2P ads remove the primary barriers that cause drop-off in traditional mobile game advertising.
- Immediate engagement: Players go from ad to gameplay in seconds. This immediacy means interested players are more likely to try your game rather than abandoning the process.
- Built-in attribution: Because the entire flow happens within the Facebook ecosystem, attribution is clean and reliable. You can track exactly which ad creative, audience, and placement drove each player.
- Social proof and re-engagement: Once a player tries your game through a C2P ad, they are part of the Facebook Games ecosystem. Their activity can appear in friends’ feeds, they can receive re-engagement notifications, and they can find the game in their Recently Played list — all of which drive additional organic growth.
- Measurable ROAS: You can measure Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) using Facebook’s measurement tools, tracking revenue from ad-acquired players against your ad spend. See the ROAS Measurement section for details on setting up measurement.
