Obesity rarely exists in isolation. Findings from the real-world AstraZeneca-sponsored CALOR programme reveals that among people living with obesity or overweight in the US, around 87% had at least one cardiorenal complication. For those also living with type 2 diabetes, this rose to around 99%. These findings reinforce the importance of recognising obesity earlier, understanding its broader impact across health, and continuing to explore approaches that reflect the interconnected nature of cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease. Every missed opportunity to prevent or detect a non-communicable disease (NCD) earlier has consequences for patients and for health systems. A new wave of policy roadmaps from the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR), provides evidence-based recommendations to enable policymakers in Germany, Greece and Spain to strengthen health systems through earlier action on NCDs. The research follows earlier work in Canada, France, Italy and Japan. This growing body of evidence is helping governments around the world make more informed decisions and investments in health for long-term benefits. The roadmaps identify practical actions to prevent, detect and treat NCDs earlier, and improve patient outcomes while strengthening the sustainability and resilience of health systems. This matters most when budgets are under pressure. Acting earlier — including timely access to medicines, diagnostics and digital tools — is a key lever to improve patients’ lives and protect health system sustainability. Getting a lung cancer diagnosis can feel like a maze, without a map. Today, on World Lung Cancer Day, we share a landmark consensus statement calling for patient navigation to become standard in every care journey. Navigation speeds up diagnosis, improves treatment adherence, and enhances care coordination. Yet, access remains inconsistent. Whilst 88% of policymakers say chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) should be a higher public health priority, that global recognition hasn’t   translated into policy action for around 480 million people living with this complex condition worldwide.    We’re challenging outdated perceptions of COPD that can so often act as a barrier to system change and optimal care.
