Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, sister to King Charles III, visited HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan Shipyard as the only corporate stop during her official visit to South Korea. During her tour of the naval shipyard and engine manufacturing facilities, Princess Anne reviewed ongoing collaborations with UK partners. Notably, this included Survitec Beaufort, a key supplier of crew survival equipment since 2013, whose solutions are currently installed on offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) under construction for the Philippine Navy. During the reception, HD Hyundai's Chairman Kisun Chung highlighted the United Kingdom as a longstanding and valued partner that has supported HD Hyundai since its founding, reaffirming the company’s commitment to contributing to the UK’s maritime and shipbuilding industries through its world-class technology and shipbuilding capabilities. This visit also reinforces a longstanding relationship between HD Hyundai and the British Royal Family, dating back to Founder Ju-yung Chung.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries(HHI) participated in the 2026 Korea Ocean Expo, held in Incheon from June 17 to 19. At the exhibition, HHI showcased its latest Offshore Patrol Vessel(OPV) and shared its vision for expanding naval technology cooperation and strengthening partnerships in Latin America. The Korea Ocean Expo is held every two years and is the nation's only maritime exhibition hosted by the Korea Coast Guard. During the exhibition, HHI presented models of its 3,000-ton offshore patrol vessel (OPV) delivered to the Korea Coast Guard and the 2,400-ton export OPV for the Philippine Navy. The AI-powered vessels are designed for a wide range of missions, including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, and disaster relief. HHI and KOTRA also hosted a partnership seminar on June 17, where they discussed Peru's naval modernization plans and opportunities for cooperation in the shipbuilding and maritime defense sectors. Building on these efforts, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering(HD-KSOE) and the Korea Coast Guard signed an MOU on June 18 to combine shipbuilding R&D capabilities and operational know-how, advancing patrol vessel technologies and enhancing export competitiveness.

A delegation of Tamil Nadu's new industry minister, Keerthana Sampath, visited HD Hyundai Heavy Industries(HHI) shipyard on June 9th. They toured shipbuilding sites and production management systems, and discussed mutual cooperation measures. Tamil Nadu, located in southern India, is a manufacturing hub with various industrial bases such as automobiles, electronics, and heavy industries, as well as port and logistics infrastructure. Recently, C. Joseph Vijay Chandrasekaran took office as the new Chief Minister, and is pushing for major policy tasks to strengthen the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry in the region and attract global investment. HD Hyundai signed a business agreement with Tamil Nadu to build a new shipyard in December, 2025 and expanded the scope of cooperation to the central government of India in April this year. Minister Keerthana's visit is seen as a sign of the strong will of the new Tamil Nadu government to foster the shipbuilding and marine industry as a future growth engine. Currently, the Tamil Nadu government is preparing a variety of support measures, ranging from site construction to port infrastructure, tax support and subsidies, to build a new shipyard.

HD Hyundai is accelerating the development of SMR-powered vessels by expanding the technology to a broader range of ship types. At Posidonia 2026 in Athens, Greece, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries(HHI) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering(HD KSOE) received Approval in Principle (AIP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for the concept design of a large Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) powered by a Molten Salt Reactor (MSR). The vessel was jointly developed by HD Hyundai, Hyundai Glovis, G-Marine Service, and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). As a type of Small Modular Reactor (SMR), MSR technology is recognized for its high level of safety and efficiency, making it particularly suitable for maritime nuclear propulsion. The vessel is expected to gain attention as a next-generation eco-friendly ship capable of high-speed, long-distance operations with zero carbon emissions. At Posidonia 2026, HD Hyundai secured certifications from global classification societies for various eco-friendly ship technologies, including an LPG dual-fuel container ship and an LPG carrier featuring a Type-B tank, while HHI signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Skaramangas Shipyards, Greece’s largest shipyard, to collaborate on manned and unmanned integrated maritime systems projects.

First Overseas Icebreaker Order Secured 🚢❄️ HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has secured its first overseas order for a dedicated icebreaker, marking a key milestone for both the company and the South Korean shipbuilding industry. The $348.9 million contract with the Sjöfartsverket (Swedish Maritime Administration) covers a 126-meter Polar Class 4 icebreaker, scheduled for delivery in 2029. This achievement reflects growing global competitiveness in the icebreaker segment and strengthens the company’s position in the advanced special-purpose ship market. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries(HHI) participated in the Sea-Air-Space 2026 (SAS 2026), the largest maritime defense exhibition in the United States, held in Washington, D.C. for four days starting on Sunday, April 19, becoming the first Korean company to set up a booth at the event. SAS 2026 featured around 430 defense companies from 57 countries, with HHI setting up a 150-square-meter joint booth in collaboration with LIG D&A. The booth features scale models of advanced naval vessels independently developed by HHI, including Aegis destroyer, frigates, next-generation combat ships, logistics support vessels, and submarines. HHI will showcase its advanced shipbuilding capabilities and unmanned systems technologies at the exhibition, positioning itself as a partner for the U.S. Navy’s next-generation maritime defense strategy. HHI will also underscore its role as a global partner capable of supporting fleet recapitalization and enabling manned–unmanned integrated operations.

A delegation of foreign military attachés from 25 countries visited HD Hyundai Heavy Industries(HHI) Ulsan headquarters, toured the shipyard and naval construction sites, and received a briefing on HHI's world-class naval technologies, on March 31st. The visit was part of a domestic security and defense cooperation program organized by the Defense Intelligence Agency, giving participants a firsthand look at the HHI’s capabilities. The delegation observed a range of vessels, including the 8,200-ton Aegis destroyer ROKS Daeho Kim Jong-seo, a 3,000-ton Korea Coast Guard patrol vessel, a 2,400-ton offshore patrol vessel for the Philippines, and a submarine undergoing maintenance. Won-ho Joo, President of HHI's Naval & Special Ships Business Unit, said the company will continue to expand naval cooperation with partners worldwide, backed by its strong competitiveness in the advanced naval defense market.
