Your First Video Edit in 5 Minutes: A No-Pressure Guide

Every creator I talk to remembers the same feeling. You have an idea for a video. You know what you want it to look like. But the moment you open a video editing app, you freeze. Where do you even start?

I’m Shelly Puri, Product Marketing Manager on the Instagram and Edits teams. I get to spend my time talking with creators at every stage of their journey, from people posting their very first reel to creators who’ve been creating content for years. And one thing I hear over and over again is that getting started can be the hardest part.

So I wanted to write this for anyone who’s been sitting on that first idea. Your first video edit doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to exist. Tap the plus icon to start a new project. You’ll see your camera roll. Pick one clip. Just one. It can be anything: your coffee this morning, your dog doing something ridiculous, a sunset you filmed last week. Tap it, and it drops onto the timeline. That’s it. You already have a video. Technically, you could post it right now. But let’s make it a little more fun.

Tap the text tool and type something simple. A description, a joke, a question. Drag it wherever you want it onscreen. The safe zones will show you where it won’t get cut off by Instagram’s interface, so your text always lands exactly where you intend it. Now tap the animation menu and choose a style. Fade in. Bounce. Typewriter. Pick whatever feels right. There’s no wrong answer here.

Tap the audio icon and you’ll see Instagram’s full music library right inside the app. Search for a royalty-free song to use in a brand video or, browse audio that’s trending. Tap once to preview, tap again to add it to your timeline. Edits will trim the track to match your clip length automatically, so you don’t have to worry about cutting audio manually. If you want to get more precise later, you can adjust exactly which part of the song plays. But for now, let the app do the work.

Scrub through the timeline with your finger. Watch your clip play with the text animation and the music together. This is your reel, you made it, and it probably took about three minutes!

Tap the export button in the top right. Edits will process your video and give you the option to post directly to Instagram or download it to post anywhere you’d like. If you’re not quite ready, save it, you can always come back. But if you are ready? Post it before you start second-guessing. Your first edit is not supposed to be a masterpiece, it’s supposed to show you that you can do this.

Once you’ve made one edit, the next ones become easier. And Edits has a lot more for you to explore as you get comfortable.
