{"id":38168,"date":"2023-04-18T10:33:45","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T17:33:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/?p=38168"},"modified":"2024-05-24T09:30:54","modified_gmt":"2024-05-24T16:30:54","slug":"horizon-worlds-teen-expansion-us-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/04\/horizon-worlds-teen-expansion-us-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcoming Teens to Meta Horizon Worlds in the US and Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since launching <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oculus.com\/experiences\/quest\/2532035600194083\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meta Horizon Worlds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we\u2019ve been amazed by the creativity on display as our community of artists, world builders, and explorers has begun to form. Until now, Worlds has been limited to those 18 and up, but Meta Quest is rated 13+, so we\u2019re excited to begin opening Worlds to teens ages 13 to 17 in the US and Canada in the coming weeks with a robust set of age-appropriate protections and safety defaults. Now, teens will be able to explore immersive worlds, play games like Arena Clash and Giant Mini Paddle Golf, enjoy concerts and live comedy events, connect with others from around the world, and express themselves as they create their own virtual experiences.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teens have already become fans of popular virtual experiences across the industry\u2014this makes it crucial that we build age-appropriate, safe, and positive experiences for them in VR. Doing so is core to our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.meta.com\/metaverse\/responsible-innovation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">responsible innovation principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and our commitment to building safer experiences for young people. That\u2019s why we invested in a number of new safety features including back-end protections and parental supervision tools that allows parents and teens to help manage the experience before making Worlds available to this age group. We\u2019re rolling out to teens slowly, so that we can carefully examine usage and are taking a phased approach before expanding more broadly. We can\u2019t wait to see everything these new members of the community bring to Worlds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Giving Teens Customized Controls with Age-appropriate Settings\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we open Worlds to teens, we\u2019re committed to providing them with a safe, age-appropriate experience. W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">e\u2019ve designed and built the teen experience with a robust set of protections and safety defaults, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Meta Horizon profile privacy settings<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Teens are in control of who they follow and who can follow them back. Teens\u2019 profiles are automatically set to private, so they\u2019re able to approve or decline anyone who requests to follow them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Active status settings:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> By default, we won\u2019t show a teen\u2019s active status and Meta Horizon Worlds location to other people in Worlds. Teens will be able to choose whether their connections can see if they\u2019re active online and which public world or event they\u2019re in.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>World and event content ratings<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> We use content ratings to ensure teens have an age-appropriate experience within Worlds. For example, mature world and event ratings prevent teens from finding, seeing, or entering spaces that contain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/store.facebook.com\/help\/quest\/articles\/horizon\/create-in-horizon-worlds\/restrictions-to-worlds-in-horizon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mature content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Our policies prohibit teens from publishing mature worlds or events. Worlds violating this policy will be removed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/quest\/articles\/horizon\/safety-and-privacy-in-horizon-worlds\/use-voice-mode-horizon-worlds\/\">Voice mode<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> This feature transforms the voices of people a teen doesn\u2019t know into quiet, friendly sounds, giving teens more control over who can communicate with them. It also garbles the teen\u2019s voice, so people they don\u2019t know can\u2019t hear them. We turn garbled voices on automatically for all teens by default within voice mode.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Limiting interactions between teens + adults they don\u2019t know<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> We want to help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2022\/11\/protecting-teens-and-their-privacy-on-facebook-and-instagram\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">prevent teens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from hearing from adults they may not know. That\u2019s why we take steps to prevent interactions between adults and unconnected teens. For example, we don\u2019t display any adults a teen doesn\u2019t know in their \u201cpeople you might know\u201d list.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Everyone, including teens, will have access to additional Worlds safety tools, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/quest\/articles\/horizon\/safety-and-privacy-in-horizon-worlds\/safe-zone-in-horizon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">safe zone<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/quest\/articles\/horizon\/safety-and-privacy-in-horizon-worlds\/personal-boundary-horizon-worlds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">personal boundary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Meta Horizon Worlds\u2019 teen safety features have been designed with input from parents, safety advocates, and experts, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/connectsafely.org\/horizon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ConnectSafely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and we continue to design with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttclabs.net\/news\/metas-best-interests-of-the-child-framework\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">best practices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the United Nations, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and youth\u00a0 developmental experts in mind. We\u2019re also continuing to invest in new and innovative ways to provide people with age-appropriate experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Giving Parents Supervision Tools for Meta Horizon Worlds<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019ve expanded our existing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oculus.com\/blog\/introducing-future-vr-parental-supervision-tools-to-help-support-families\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">VR parental supervision tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to include Meta Horizon Worlds, making it easier for parents and guardians to help manage their teens\u2019 experience and support healthy conversations about safety in VR. Parents and guardians can set up Worlds parental supervision by inviting their teen to connect through <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Family Center<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014or teens can invite their parents or guardian to connect with them via the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meta Quest app<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Family Center<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Once connected, parents can see and adjust a variety of their teen\u2019s settings not only for safety features within Worlds, but for the entire Meta Quest Platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Together, parental supervision on Meta Quest and Worlds lets parents and guardians:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See, adjust, and lock safety features like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/quest\/articles\/horizon\/safety-and-privacy-in-horizon-worlds\/use-voice-mode-horizon-worlds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">voice mode <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/quest\/articles\/horizon\/safety-and-privacy-in-horizon-worlds\/personal-boundary-horizon-worlds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">personal boundary<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for their teen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See who their teen follows and who follows their teen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See which apps their teen has used and how much time they\u2019ve spent in Meta Quest and Worlds in the past seven days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Give permission to allow or block their teen from using apps, including Worlds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Access <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/quest\/articles\/horizon\/safety-and-privacy-in-horizon-worlds\/index-safety-and-privacy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">resources about our available safety features<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, everyone\u2014including teens\u2014can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/quest\/articles\/in-vr-experiences\/oculus-features\/cast-with-quest-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cast their experience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from Meta Quest, allowing them to share what they\u2019re seeing in VR and Worlds with parents, guardians, or others around them. To learn more about settings on Meta Quest parental supervision, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">visit our Help Center<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additional Education for Parents, Guardians, and Teens<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019ve built dedicated education for parents, guardians, and teens to better support teens\u2019 experiences in Worlds:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Family Center for Worlds: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/familycenter.meta.com\/our-products\/horizon-worlds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Family Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is expanding to include Worlds. On Family Center, parents can access supervision tools, tips, and resources from experts and other information about online safety and well-being to <strong>support their teens\u2019 experiences across Meta technologies.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>In-product education for teens<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> We\u2019ve built educational safety tips into the Worlds experience specifically for teens to remind them of safety best practices. For example, we\u2019ll remind them to only accept follow requests from people they know.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019re excited to welcome teens aged 13 to 17 in the US and Canada to Worlds in the coming weeks. And as we look toward the future metaverse, we\u2019ll continue to explore ways we can make VR work well for families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting unlocked (default) &#8211; Parent\u2019s
